The lower ego makes excuses for things we do not want to face

Ever been bypassed for a promotion, or lost an account to a competitor, or lost someone to a love rival? Yeah? And remember how our minds and emotions come up with the best excuses as to why we didn’t get it?

Sometimes, it is truly because we lost to a worthy opponent and that it was a tight race, and we were both equally good. But most of the time, it is because you were not up to scratch, or not ready, or just do not have what it takes. I know, I’m supposed to be a life coach and I’m supposed to encourage and not discourage. BUT, as a life coach, it is also important for me to also dish out the honest, painful truth.

Let me share a story about a young lady who quit her job because she didn’t like her new boss and felt that her boss would not be able to do the job needed. She felt she was probably in a better position to do the job scope, despite not having the experience that her new boss has. Her coach asked her if she did her research about this new boss of hers, and she said that she heard what others said. Do all sound familiar?

Her coach did what any coach would do, that is, lead her to face the truth of what she is saying in her own mind. Not only did she make a decision based on hearsay, but she also did not give herself or the new boss a chance to work things out. A little rash in her decision? Yes. After a session with her coach, she realised she was throwing a temper tantrum that she didn’t get the promotion she wanted. She also made the painful realisation that the company that she left probably has one of the best forward movement direction for her career, in the near future, if she had been patient.

This was a painful but good life lesson for her, so it became clearer to her that work is needed on herself, and she also saw that her inexperience would not have given her the scope she needed to take on the position of her new boss.

Our lower ego usually grasps at whatever is available, whatever is convenient to blame and we make life-changing decisions based on this.

How many people make life decisions like these without realising the painful truth? Too many. And the worse thing is, they continue to lead their lives based on comfortable untruths they feed themselves. In this game of life, the only one who has won, and came out stronger is the lower ego.

The story above may sound as if this only happens to young people. Unfortunately, it is not a young person issue. This happens to even the most experienced people because as one gets older, perhaps more pride can potentially be wounded? And this can prevent the most experienced people to develop themselves further, simply because the lower ego has been given way too much leeway to run a person’s life.
