Bad Habits/Addictions: A Procrastination Tactic By Our Lower Ego

Uncategorized Jun 17, 2019

When you indulge in your bad habit or addiction, you know it is bad for you, but you can’t help it, and you do it anyway, only to feel a little guilty. You say to yourself that this will be the last time.

But. It just was not your last time!

So what is this thing that has you hooked? That you just can’t help it. Or feel as if you can’t help it?

Take some time and think about it. Are you usually indulging in your bad habit/addiction when you are supposed to be doing something else?
Is this just a way to procrastinate doing what you deem as something difficult, stressful, challenging to do?

Before we go on, I like to explain the concept of the Ego. We do need the Ego to serve our purpose, it is our identity, it makes us who we are. It is a vehicle or a face for us to utilise to live our purpose, to live our lives, and to enjoy what life on earth has to offer. However, within the Ego are two aspects, they are the Higher and the Lower Egos. The higher ego is in alignment with your soul, or spirit, that is always striving to do what is for your highest good, even if it may be challenging at times. The higher ego also holds all the good stuff — strength, courage, compassion, love and so on. Your higher ego allows you to be the best that you can be on earth. Now, there is the sibling of the higher ego, which we will call the lower ego. The lower ego is like a consciousness that is aligned with all things that will take you away from being the best that you can be. So, guess who is the one who is making you procrastinate?

Yup, it is the lower ego. It wants you to delay your own success and it wants you to feed it so that the lower ego can become stronger. The lower ego is also responsible for all the fights, arguments, negative emotions and so on that, you have had your entire life. You literally have a war going on within yourself. It is the battle of the Egos.

Of course, you have a choice as to who will win the battle. You always have a choice. At this point, you might want to ask yourself, which is the better salesperson who is convincing you to do its bidding?

So if you think that your bad habits/addictions are not serving you well, then you need to make another choice as to who you wish to listen to.

Think of the two egos are the two voices sitting on either side of your shoulders, who is louder? Who do you wish to ignore? And who do you wish to give more attention to?

I always find this topic about egos such a fascinating one! So, we will talk about egos again next week. In the meantime, let me know what you think. Maybe you would like to share with you your own stories of your internal battle between the two egos within yourself.
